Shaykh Nazim (qs): Patience is the Key to Faith

The following excerpt is taken from the transcribed talks of Shaykh Nazim Adil al-Haqqani (qs) under the out of print title of Mercy Oceans’ Hidden Treasures.

In his inimitable and unique style, accessible to all students and seekers of divine knowledge, and all sincere and humble people, Shaykh Nazim here speaks on the importance of patience and forbearance, the ability to remain rooted, anchored and present in an internal spiritual state of surrender, as the key to developing and strengthening one’s faith and level of belief, known as iman in the noble Arabic language.

Shaykh Nazim teaches in this lesson that we live in particularly difficult times, and that now, more than ever, real and authentic spiritual development is necessary, especially for the Muslim, who has been honored by Allah Almighty to carry and represent the noble Way of the last and final Messenger to mankind, the Blessed Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

Shaykh Nazim continues to teach that through developing patience and forbearance, stability and serenity, regardless of external circumstances and events, one develops true faith and spiritual power.

Such true faith and belief can only be developed through spiritual practice and proper guidance and training from a qualified teacher who has himself gone through the necessary self-purification required to support and lead others upon the Path.

Shaykh Nazim also points towards the secret that through patience, the deeper secrets and realities of the heart awaken, and one’s true divine potential realized.

Shaykh Nazim (qs): Patience is the Key to Faith

My Grandshaykh is instructing us on the importance of being patient in the face of every disliked thing, and saying that it is a most important practice for everyone to keep in his life. Don’t run in panic every time some disliked thing happens to you. Not to panic and not to loose one’s head are the most important and useful abilities anyone can have in our times.

So many great and terrible things may occur suddenly, and you must not loose your cool. You must stand firm in the face of every terrible and gigantic event, and hold them far away from you.

What can give us this much needed characteristic? A strong belief. Faith. Without faith, you won’t be able to keep yourself standing firmly. Only strong faith will keep you together.

Now, in these days, people will taste of terrible events and they are most in need of such strong faith. Grandshaykh was advising us that whenever such an unliked event appears, you must be ready to face it, it is your duty to face it.

You must know that every time you confront such an event with steadfastness, you are improving spiritually, moving powerfully and deliberately towards your destination, and the more trying the event, the more quickly you are propelled to your destination.

“Oh my sons,” says Grandshaykh, “Oh my people, you must know that every goodness is going to appear through your patience in the face of disliked actions or events. Every goodness and real knowledge will spring from your patience. The Knowledge of Certainty (‘Ilm ul-Yaqeen), the Sight of Certainty (‘Ain ul-Yaqeen) and the Truth of Certainty (Haq ul-Yaqeen) will all appear through facing these unliked events with patience.”

That patience is the key which opens up the treasures for the Sons of Adam, and all those who stand firmly in the face of trials and are patient, they will be given the keys to their treasures.

  1. It is very touching and I believe with my soul and heart whatever the great shaykh said but how to attain such degree of patience with out a murshid e Kamil like him? Ordinary people like me have no reach to such teacher ..

    1. Dear sister Naila, the most important resource and connection we can possibly have in this world is a true and sincere servant of God. In fact, Allah Almighty commands and orders that we seek out such, stating explicitly, “Be mindful of God, and be with the truthful,” [9:119].

Seek and you shall find. This is part of our path, faith and religion. May Allah Ta’ala guide and bless.

You are welcome to join us in the new Golden Path program and resource.
